Rebecca Summers, MD
Dr. Rebecca (Becca) Summers is an Internal Medicine Physician & Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner with over a decade of experience as both a Primary Care and Infectious Disease physician. The more she cared for patients, the more she became aware of how the effects of chronic stress and trauma contributed to disease states, emotions, and behaviors in her patients. She felt that she’d reached a wall in her ability to help people improve their health the way she’d hoped. In 2020, she began a three year training in Somatic Experiencing® (SE) to help bridge this gap. SE is a naturalistic and neurobiological approach that aims to resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in our bodies. It supports the nervous system to come into more regulation and increase capacity towards stressors. This, in turn, allows for more resilience, awareness, and connection to self and to others. SE was developed by Dr. Peter Levine, PhD, over decades of observation and clinical experience. Since starting the training, Becca brings the tools of SE to all of her work now.
Dr. Summers recognizes how pregnancy loss, fertility struggles, and intense birth experiences are potent moments in a woman’s life where trauma may be experienced and old traumas may resurface. This provides an opportunity to heal and is also a crucial time when women need support with nurturing tools like SE. She too recognizes how traumatizing the standard medical system can sometimes be towards patients and just the thought of getting medical care can be so difficult after these experiences. Becca recognizes the power of integrating different healing techniques and modalities in order to maximize a patient’s health. Her goal is to support people to have healthier lives with more energy, vitality, joy, and capacity.
She earned her Medical Degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and is double boarded in Internal Medicine & Infectious Disease. In early 2023 she became a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and has done further training for using SE in those experiencing medical syndromes and Long COVID. She is also certified to deliver the Safe & Sound Protocol, a sound therapy targeting the vagus nerve that helps retune the nervous system to be more regulated and resilient to life’s challenges.
